What message do you want the furbearer to know? It is important to know how to use baits and lures for trapping. What we use for baits and lures sends a message to the animal and they will react to what you told them to do. As an example gland lures usually tell the animal another animal has marked their territory and generally the furbearer will respond by urinating at the same spot. Baits and food lures should create a hunger sensation to the animal and they expect to eat when they bite down.
Loud smelling, skunky odors are meant to be used during cold environments. and season. The same applies to tainted baits versus fresh baits., When the weather is warm you should consider using non tainted baits and stick with fresh odors.
November 1 has a lot of dispersing going on with fur bearers. Young pups are always looking for a easy meal. This makes dirt hole sets successful. I suggest you try Flint Hills Red Fox Paste Bait in the hole, and smear Alpine Call lure on the back lip of the dirt hole. The one two punch has both curiosity to call them in and food in the hole to hold their attention.
Set a scent post set using High Hills Gland Lure and Bobcat Urine at least 30 steps away.
Depending on weather, generally it is a good time to start switching from 50% Dirt hole sets to only setting 25% dirt hole sets. The coyotes that are left are a little more educated and are getting better at surviving. Dirt Hole set call lure can change to louder odors such as Final Destination or Kansas Call.
Start splitting your scent post sets to making grab and die flat sets using Positive Attraction or Catty Coyote Lures.
Ok its cold now and coyotes are starting to think about making more coyotes and bobcats are coming into better fur quality. Start incorporating more cat odors into your canine trap line. Use Oklahoma Suicide Sauce at dirt hole sets. Make flat sets using Feline Finalizer, X Factor, and change your gland lure to Kansas Predator Extreme or Bobcat Gland Lure. These changes can really add up to success.
